Nigeria is a country that is very close to my heart. I have never been there but I have been teaching the same EAL/D student for three years - from year 4 to year 6. She is the most talented and special girl and I am going to miss her so much when she goes to high school next year. I love hearing stories about her upbringing in Nigeria; sometimes they are hard to hear but I know that she and her family are safe and happy in Australia. They have recently become citizens and give so much to help their fellow people back in Nigeria as they feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunities they have in Australia. I try to make time in classroom for her to share her tales and I can tell that she loves it too.

Looking at Nigeria through a different lens has really opened my eyes to the possibilities for teaching and learning. What if students could make global connections with people and learn about real issues. Imagine the ideas that they could dream up! These ideas could lead to actual solutions....who knows??

This video could spark some genuine empathy, which could lead to interest in the TWB initiative.

He who opens a book closes a prison gate.
